Show Up was set up in order to give as many children as possible access to quality Arts education. Show Up gives weekly drama workshops to classes in South West England. These workshops lead to the development of a script, which is then performed for their community. This experience of being part of a performance give the children invaluable transferable skills such as working in a team, resilience and the sheer joy of being part of the creative process!
"When the lights come up, when the show begins, when it’s up to you, what will you do? Show Up gives young people to opportunity to feel their best"
Any young person at all can take part. Show Up is intentionally and totally inclusive, with no boundaries to who can take part.
Currently the focus of the company is on primary schools, but with more funding this can reach out further afield, move into secondary and special schools in urban as well as country areas and ultimately the model can appear all over the country!
This is not an acting class and not just about theatre. The skills the young people involved learn are transferable life skills, which will be used in any walk of life. Perhaps the most important result of taking part in Show Up is, as the name suggests, the resilience to Show Up for life. To develop that crucial ability to understand that you are worth something, that you can overcome obstacles and survive, that you are good enough. This is, surely, the foundation of mental health. Everyone is a piece of the puzzle. All working together to create a whole.
